
Financial assistance for funeral costs

If you're receiving certain benefits and need assistance with funeral costs, you may be eligible for a Funeral Expenses Payment from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).
✅ Eligibility Criteria
You may qualify if you or your partner receive one or more of the following benefits:
Universal Credit
- Income Support
- Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance
- Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
- Pension Credit
- Housing Benefit
- Child Tax Credit
- Working Tax Credit (with disability or severe disability element)
- Support for Mortgage Interest loan Additionally, you must be responsible for arranging the funeral and have a qualifying relationship with the deceased, such as being their partner, parent (in certain circumstances), or a close relative or friend. The funeral must take place in the UK

The Funeral Expenses Payment can help with Burial or cremation fees
- Travel to arrange or attend the funeral
- Moving the body within the UK (if over 50 miles)
- Death certificates or other documents
Note that the amount you receive may be reduced by any money available from the deceased's estate (excluding a house or personal belongings left to a surviving partner).
📝 How to Apply
You must apply within six months of the funeral.

Call the DWP Bereavement Service helpline at 0800 151 2012 (Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm). An adviser can assist you with your claim and inform you about other bereavement benefits you might be entitled to.
